An air-pulsated jig has been widely adopted as a main coal washer. It may be mainly because of its many technical and economic features such as large capacity, low running cost, long life, etc. However, the recent increasing demand of fuel coal requires a higher productivity and efficiency of the air-pulsated jig. To fill this requirement theoretical and experimental investigations have been conducted on model and practical jigs in Japan. This paper generalizes the results of these investigations. The jigging mechanism should be analyzed as a hindered settling system in which the expansion of the bed plays an important role, and the pulsating mechanism as a vibratory system in which the water is caused to vibrate by the air chamber pressure and subjected to a large damping force offered by the bed. However, it should be noted that the relations between these major factors are complicated. For example, the air chamber pressure acting as an exciting force is inversely affected by the water pulsation. Hence, in order to fully understand the phenomena taking place in the air-pulsated jig it is necessary to take into account of such a feedback effect. From the above consideration theoretical and experimental investigations on both mechanisms have been carried out. In this paper the investigations on the following items are reviewed: a basic relation between water pulsation and bed expansion; separating speed of bed particle and its dependence on the water pulsation; standard deviations in practical jigs; computer simulation and measurement of the pulsating mechanism of a TACUB jig; development of a new type of air valve to create a desired pulsation; uniform pulsation in a large Baum jig.
