Model-independent analysis of the inverse electroproduction of pions at 276 MeV

A phenomenological analysis is made of data on the reaction ..pi../sup -/+p..-->..e/sup +/+e/sup -/+n at 276 MeV. The contributions to the cross section for this reaction from states with various polarizations of the virtual photon are determined by a model-independent procedure. The results are compared with the predictions of a dispersion model. The production cross section for a scalar photon is determined. A model-independent method of measuring the Dirac isovector form factor of the nucleon is proposed.
