A phosphoniobate with an intersecting tunnel structure related to pyrochlore: Rb[sub 3]Nb[sub 5]P[sub 2]O[sub 19]

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (United States)
A new phosphoniobate Rb[sub 3]Nb[sub 5]P[sub 2]O[sub 19] with an intersecting tunnel structure has been synthesized. It crystallizes in the R3c space group with a[sub H] = 12.989(2) [angstrom] and c[sub H] = 53.912(6) [angstrom]. The host lattice, related to the pyrochlore framework, is built up from [open quotes]Nb[sub 6]O[sub 27][close quotes] and [open quotes]Nb[sub 3]O[sub 3]O[sub 24][close quotes] units which share their corners in the (001) planes, forming [Nb[sub 2]PO[sub 8]][sub [infinity]] layers. These layers, connected through NbO[sub 6] octahedra, delimit large cages along c which contain the rubidium ions. The cages are connected through hexagonal tunnels running along (2 1 0)[sub H]. The relationships with pyrochlore and Rb[sub 10]Nb[sub 29.2]O[sub 78] are studied.
