A mixed valence vanadium phosphate with a tunnel structure: Rb sub 6 V sub 6 P sub 6 O sub 31

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (United States)
A new mixed-valence vanadium phosphate Rb{sub 6}V{sub 6}P{sub 6}O{sub 31} has been isolated. Its structure was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with a = 7.0656(4) {angstrom}, b = 13.4988(8) {angstrom}, c = 14.4198(9) {angstrom}, {upsilon} = 1375.3(2) {angstrom}{sup 3}, Z = 4, R = 0.049, and R{sub w} = 0.052 for 1,058 unique reflections with I > 3{sigma}(I). The three-dimensional framework (V{sub 6}P{sub 6}O{sub 31}){sub {infinity}} can be described by the assemblage of octahedral (VO{sub 3}){sub {infinity}} chains with double chains (V{sub 2}P{sub 2}O{sub 10}){sub {infinity}} built up from single PO{sub 4} tetrahedra and double pyramidal units V{sub 2}O{sub 9}. The cohesion of the framework is achieved by P{sub 2}O{sub 7} groups which share their corners with V{sub 2}O{sub 9} units. This host lattice delimits very large tunnels running along b and five-sided tunnels running along a. The rubidium cations are located at the intersection of these tunnels.
