Single crystals of the new reduced niobium oxide. Rb[sub 4]Al[sub 2]Nb[sub 35]O[sub 70], were grown by heating mixtures of Na[sub 3]NbO[sub 4], NbO, and RbCl in an alumina boat, sealed in a fused silica tube. Rb[sub 4]Al[sub 2]Nb[sub 35]O[sub 70] crystallizes in the trigonal space group P[bar 3]: a = 7.815(1) [angstrom], c = 26.392(9) [angstrom], with one formula unit per unit cell. The structure was determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to an R value of 3.39%. Three distinct types of niobium atom coordination environments exist in this structure including isolated NbO[sub 6] octahedra, Nb[sub 3]O[sub 13] triangular clusters formed by 3 face-shared NbO[sub 6] octahedra, and Nb[sub 6] octahedral clusters of the type [Nb[sub 6]O[sub 12]]O[sub 6].
