Cables for 400 kV and above

Oil-filled cables are providing transmission capacity where undergrounding is called for on the CEGB 275 and 400 kV system; but this well-developed design has disadvantages at these voltages which are likely to become overwhelming if a higher ac transmission voltage becomes necessary as the system expands. The CEGB's Central Electricity Research Laboratories have been investigating this difficulty and have evolved two designs of cable with some promise for the future. These are a cable using polythene tape as the principal dielectric, with gas pressurization to suppress ionization; and a cable in which a pressurized gas provides the main insulation, solid material being used only to provide spacing of conductor from sheath at relatively infrequent intervals.
