Geotechnology involves the science and engineering of soil deposits, rock masses, and the fluid they contain. This editorial emphasizes the importance of geotechnology to a wide variety of important current issues and problems. The history of the Geotechnical Board is given along with the GeoBoard's list of seven national issues that depend strongly on application of geotechnology. Four general areas of geotechnical study, identified by the Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems of the National Research Council, are also given.
