The basic purpose of this book, the fourth in an ASTM series on marine geotechnology, is to present information on concerns that geotechnical engineers should have in designing and building offshore structures. A symposium cosponsored by ASTM Committee D-18 on Soil and Rock, Tongji University, Lehigh University and the Chinese Academy of Science of Shanghai, People's Republic of China brought together geotechnical experts and served as the basis of this book. This event was the first major international conference to be held in China since 1948. The following needs of the geotechnical community were addressed by the symposium: 1. to identify the types and varieties of in-situ and laboratory strength and property tests performed on marine sediments; 2. to determine the environmental handling and preparation factors that affect strength and property measurements; 3. to compare laboratory and in-situ strength and property values; and 4. to examine the strength and property behavior of different marine sediment types. A special feature of this book is the unique information it provides on China coast topography and Chinese engineers' experience.
