Heat recovered from two IBM main frame computers as well as from lights and occupants provides all the heat needed for a new Grand Rapids, Michigan office building and off-peak summer cooling. Energy consumption is over 50% below the 80,000 Btu per square foot needed by buildings of comparable size. A 1000-point Honeywell Delta 5100 combined with a Delta 1000 facility management system coordinate the heat transfer functions. The article describes the waste-heat recovery, hot water circulation, chiller, and thermal storage systems.
