GE fluorescent yields 100 lumens per watt

An operating efficiency of 100 lumens per watt has been claimed by General Electric for its new fluorescent lamp. Although the lamp is commercially available, its use will be limited because of poor color rendition. GE's ''Lite White'' phosfor, introduced last year as a smaller Watt-Miser II lamp, is available in an 8-foot, 60 watt lamp and is claimed to have more efficient energy use than earlier models because it concentrates energy use on the portion of the spectrum where the eye is most sensitive. This will reduce color rendition from a color rendering index (CRI) of 65 for cool-white lighting to 54 for the new bulb. GE spokesmen claim the energy conservation potential of the new bulb makes its use valid where color quality is not essential.
