Low-watt metal halide lamps catching on with retail users

Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)
OSTI ID:5284408
Light bulb manufacturers are responding to a demand from retail stores for metal halide lamps in smaller sizes of between 70 and 400 watts. Architects and engineers prefer the lamps for indoor use because of their superior color rendition, while retailers find them easier to aim at defined areas than fluorescent lamps. Although initial costs are higher, fewer metal halide lamps are needed, making a less than two-year payback possible. Utility rebates can contribute to the energy savings. The article reports on the costs and performance of several installations.
