Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in San Diego cut its electricity cost by about $130,000 last year, despite a 40% cut in utility off-peak rates, to save $195,000 in the cost of producing steam. Phase 1 of the conservation program focused on repairing systems and upgrading maintenance programs. The second phase expanded the program following completion of a technical energy audit to take advantage of government incentives for installing energy-efficient lighting, motors, and other equipment. A cogeneration plant, powered by a natural gas-fueled Saturn turbine generator set, produces both electricity and steam for hospital use.
