Hospital cogeneration on the rise to cut electricity and steam costs

Journal Article · · Cogeneration; (United States)
OSTI ID:6533402
Higher electricity rates and natural gas costs have encouraged hospitals to turn to cogeneration. An on-site system produces power to be used by the hospital or sold to the utility and heat to be used for space heating and cooling, water heating, and for sterilizers and laundry equipment. Both legal and economic incentives exist to support this trend. A second factor is the development of a cogeneration industry and a service infrastructure. The author describes some of the factors which will influence the choice of an organizational structure for a cogeneration system. Other factors are that hospitals are good technical candidates for cogeneration and the increasing number of hospitals that have brought successful projects on line. 6 figures.
