Following a 1982 audit, the Ellenville Community Hospital in New York contracted with Bio-Energy Service Corp. (Besco) to provide steam, hot water, and electricity at 20% less than it would pay to produce its own hot water and steam and 10% less than it would pay for utility power. Besco designed and will maintain the system, which is owned by a third-party. The hospital learned from its audit that capital investment would be necessary to accomplish further energy conservation. The system will produce 75 kW from a propane-fired cogeneration engine, potable water from rooftop solar collectors, and steam produced by heat exchangers from exhaust heat. The hospital will purchase supplemental oil and electricity as needed. The hospital has an option to buy the equipment in 20 years when the contract expires.
