Flexible riser use okay in North Sea

Tests conducted on flexible production risers indicate the material can be used in floating production applications in rough environments, but that a submerged buoy would have to be used in long term applications. Engineers maintain flexible risers could withstand 100-year storms in the North Sea and quick disconnection and re-connection in the case of emergencies. Three configurations studied for North Sea applications are presented. A riser model has been developed to predict the behavior of risers. A diagram of the model is included.
