When considering the production riser aspect of a floating-production facility project, two systems can be generally envisaged: - The rigid steel, tensioned multiple riser. - The flexible, dynamic riser. Although this last one was successfully introduced in Brazil as early as 1978, and since then has proved to be an extremely reliable solution in several other parts of the world as well, for other major operators, the industry in general was still recently expressing some concern about its introduction in an extreme-weather environment such as the North Sea. A more classic and well-known technique such as the steel tensioned riser was generally favoured by companies operating in this hostile context. (Ex: Argyll, Buchan). This paper describing what can be considered as a typical development involving flexible, dynamic risers in the North Sea, presents evidence that this concern, although understandable, is mostly unfounded and that on the contrary, the flexible, dynamic riser represents a very considerable improvement in the reliability and efficiency of a floating-facility offshore development.
