Misperception and misdirection: a look at energy price controls

The author sees price controls as being responsible for much of our energy problem because they limit domestic production, which is the way to break a cartel. Subsidies and taxes can keep prices lowered, but they do not affect the cartel and they provide little incentive to conserve. The rationale for price controls is refuted on each of five points: incentives to produce, depletion rates, fairness, poverty, and inflation. Upward pressures on energy prices will continue until the price rises which began with the first phase of deregulation reach the price of synthetic fuel. (DCK)
