Simple dienes quench the fluorescence of 1-chloronaphthalene and 4-chlorobiphenyl with a concurrent singlet-state photochemical reaction, which does not involve dechlorination. Similar chemistry is brought about when the diene is initially excited. Chlorobiphenyls quench the fluorescence of N,N-dimethylaniline with concomitant photodechlorination of the aryl chloride. Attempts to extent this reaction to amines having longer wavelength absorption were unsuccessful.
