The latest official figures demonstrate again that the consumer-owners of the nation's publicly owned electric utilities enjoy electric rates significantly lower than those paid by customers of private power companies. This has been true since the comparative study began in 1946. The Energy Information Agency's data covering 203 private power companies and 162 local publicly owned utilities showed that the average residential consumer in a public power system used 23.5% more electricity and paid 14.3% less. The average difference in rates was 2.09 cents per kWh. Investor owned systems had higher expenses and higher production costs. 1 figure, 3 tables.
