Public power costs less: IOU residential rates averaged 44% higher in 1979

Journal Article · · Public Power; (United States)

Comparative statistics published by the utility industry over the past 32 years show that local publicly owned utilities consistently provide power at a lower cost than investor-owned utilities (IOUs). The average residential consumer used 31.5% more electricity in 1979, for example, but paid 8.6% less at an average difference of 1.42 cents per kilowatt-hour. Similar differences are shown for commercial and industrial consumers. The public power system spends less on administration and general operating expenses, although production costs are increasing for both. 4 tables. (DCK)
