Effect of temperature on electron attachment and detachment in SF{sub 6} and c-C{sub 4}F{sub 6}
- Oak Ridge National Lab., TN (United States)
The total electron attachment rate constant for SF{sub 6} and c-C{sub 4}F{sub 6} was found to be virtually independent of T, for gas temperatures, T, in the range of 300 to 600 K and for mean electron energies below 1.0 eV. Under the same experimental conditions the stabilized SF{sub 6}{sup {minus}} does not undergo autodetachment but the stabilized c-C{sub 4}F{sub 6}{sup {minus}} undergoes a profound increase in autodetachment (about four orders of magnitude). This difference between the SF{sub 6}{sup {minus}} and the c-C{sub 4}F{sub 6} autodetachment can be attributed to the larger electron affinity of the SF{sub 6} molecule compared to c-C{sub 4}F{sub 6}. The heat-activated autodetachment of c-C{sub 4}F{sub 6}{sup {minus}} is related to the increase in the anion`s internal energy with increasing T and is found to have an activation energy of 0.237 eV.
