Pragmatic econometric approach to assessing economic impacts of growth or decline in urban areas
- Univ. of Florida, Gainesville
An econometric simulation model is presented as a pragmatic way to analyze the economic impacts on areas that are losing population and those where growth is taking place. The low-cost model includes in its variables a linkage between the regional and national economy and between environmental and economic activities. It can be adapted and used by most small and middle-size communities. To illustrate its use, an analysis is made of Gainesville, Fla., to show the potential impacts on a community when there is a new firm and when the leading employer adopts a no-growth policy. Advantages of the model are its flexibility, its reliance on statistics, its handling of variables usually omitted, and its adaptability. 31 references.
