FERC (U. S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) judge approves West Coast LNG project

In mid-Aug. 1979, FERC Judge S. Gordon approved Western LNG Terminal Associate's proposed southern California LNG terminal subject to final approval by FERC and by the U.S. Economic Regulatory Administration. The terminal would be located at Little Cojo, near Point Conception. Gordon noted that the California Public Utilities Commission decided in favor of the Point Conception site, and dismissed two arguments against the Little Cojo site: that it has seismic hazards and that it would have impact on Chumash Indian culture and religious values. According to Western LNG President K. McKinney, the decision will allow the firm to retain Indonesian LNG contracts, which were signed about six years ago. Indonesia has threatened to cancel the sale of gas reserves, which Japanese interests want to purchase.
