The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) gave final approval for two projects to import LNG from Indonesia and Alaska into a terminal to be built at Little Cojo, near Point Conception, Calif. The combined projects should be fully operational in the early 1980's, when a total of up to 900 million cu ft/day of gas will move into California during a 20 yr period and supply an estimated 25% of California's natural gas needs. Pacific Indonesia LNG Co., under agreement with Pertamina P.N., will import 539 million cu ft/day of gas, equivalent to more than 200 trillion Btu/yr for 20 yr, at a California terminal base price of $2.60/million Btu. Pacific Alaska LNG Associates will buy approx. 431.4 million cu ft/day of gas from Cook Inlet area producers and import it at a base price of $1.62/million Btu. The cost of the regasified LNG in California will be $4-$5/million Btu, the high cost being due to the large capital costs and the expenses of liquefying, shipping, and regasifying the LNG. FERC rate determinations and other relevant federal actions are surveyed.
