This is the second in a series of five articles identifying barriers to more widespread utilization of slimhole drilling and completion technologies for reducing the costs to drill and complete US gas wells. Last month, part one discussed slimhole drilling barriers. The focus of this article is slimhole cementing. Its purpose is to identify challenges to cementing operations in slim-hole applications, offer potential solutions to the challenges, and explore opportunities for additional technology development that may broaden slim-hole's applicability. Future articles will address slimhole stimulation, logging and perforating, and completion and workover tools. These articles summarize the results of a study funded by the Gas Research Institute (GRI) and prepared by an industry team consisting of Maurer Engineering, BJ Services, Baker Oil Tools and Halliburton Energy Services.
