The agreement of Neste Oy, Finland's state-owned oil and gas corporation, to import 2 billion cubic meters per year of Soviet natural gas could mean up to 600 MWe of new gas-fueled combined heat and power plant capacity installed in Finland during the next ten years. The new gas supplies from the USSR will come across the border through the existing pipeline, with the new system continuing west from Kouvola to Riihimaki. From there, the new line will branch north to Tampere and south to Helsinki, with an intermediate branchline to serve Lahti and Heinola to the north. Neste Oy officials see installation of district heating and combined heat and power (CHP) plants along the existing and new pipeline routes providing some of their major potential customers for imported natural gas. It is estimated that up to 600 MW of gas turbine-based combined heat and power capacity could be installed, with the main markets in Tampere, Hyvinkaa, and Helsinki.
