LAVO combined cycle nears 80000 hours CHP operation
Since February 1975, Lappeenrannan Laempoevoima Oy (LAVO) in Finland has been operating a base load electric power-district heating station built around a twin gas turbine combined cycle plant and an independent peaking plant with one gas turbine and hot water heat exchanger. Nominally rated at 187 MW electric and maximum 170 MW thermal output, LAVO's Mertaniemi station is the first, and so far the only natural gas-distillate fired combined cycle/district heating plant in Finland. In operation, the power station supplies electricity and heat to domestic and industrial customers in the town of Lappeenranta in the southeastern part of the country, about 200 km from Helsinki. While the town takes all the thermal power the plant puts out, excess electric power is wheeled through the national grid.
