Energy supply and demand in the Caribbean Region, 1978-2000

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6738383
This study discusses and projects energy demand for countries in and bordering the Caribbean Ocean through the year 2000. Forecasts, on a country-by-country basis, are formed using estimates for the gross domestic product growth rates, petroleum price increases, and income and price elasticities. Energy demand is generally concluded to rise during the forecast period, even with greater conservation efforts, but at a slower rate than in the past. The costs of imported energy are projected to increase faster than national incomes and in some cases may seriously adversely affect prospects for economic development. Energy demands are further projected on a sector-by-sector basis for Central American nations. These forecasts are consistent with results of the aggregated projections and indicate that for these countries, major efforts should be devoted towards reducing the transportation sector's demand for energy.
