(. pi. /sup -/,. pi. /sup -/p) reaction in light nuclei at 170 MeV meson energy

Nuclear emulsions have been used to study the (..pi../sup -/,..pi../sup -/p) reaction in C and O nuclei at a ..pi../sup -/ energy of 170 MeV. Values are obtained for the integrated reaction cross section, the momentum and angular distributions of the residual nuclei, the energy and angular distributions of the protons, and the differential cross section for scattering of ..pi../sup -/ mesons. The experimental distributions are compared with calculations using the dispersion theory of direct nuclear reactions. It is concluded that there is a dominant contribution of the pole mechanism in the region of small momentum transfers to the nucleus (less than 150 MeV/c) and an estimate is made of the contribution of other mechanisms.
