Nuclear emulsions have been used to study the ..pi..eactions (..pi../sup + -/, ..pi../sup + -/, d) and (..pi../sup + -/, r/sup + -/, He) in the nuclei C, N, and O at a ..pi..-meson energy 170 Mev. We have obtained integrated cross sections, momentum and angular distributions of the residual nuclei, energy and angular distributions of deuterons and helium nuclei, and the differential cross section for pion scattering. A theoretical analysis of the experimental data is carried out. It is found that in the region of low residual-nucleus momentum q (less than 200 MeV/c) the direct knockout of deuterons and He nuclei is dominant. It is shown that the low energies of these particles (less than 20 MeV) are due to scattering of the pion by the heavy fragment and to the two-stage mechanism. It is observed that for deuteron energies 15--50 MeV and large q the experiment is consistent with the triangle mechanism with nucleon pickup. The contributions of these mechanisms to the cross sections for the investigated reactions are determined, and a comparison is made with similar data at energies 60 and 115 MeV.
