Electricity for rural America: the fight for REA

Book ·
OSTI ID:6730464
The electrification of agriculture was undertaken as a public responsibility when the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) was formed in 1935. A number of issues, many with regional bias, were debated before and after in spite of the program's success. REA was viewed as a way to inprove rural prosperity, health, life style, and sanitation while arresting the migration to the cities and ultimate loss of the rural way of life. Opposition to rural cooperatives came from the private power companies; the opposition was ideological, however, since both sides sought rural electrification. The story of REA is traced in the context of these differences. 267 references. (DCK)
