Despite its size, there is little visible indication of the vast and sophisticated operation being carried on near Herscher, Ill., by Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America. Herscher lies over massive domed aquifers, and gas is stored in these formations at 2 levels. The Herscher complex has capabilities of storing 110 plus billion cu ft of gas, about 60% of this being stored in the Mt. Simon Formation and the balance in the Galesville Formation. Since some injection goes on year-round, net withdrawal is in the order of 20 billion scf even though 30 billion scf is actually withdrawn during a good season. The horsepower includes 3 General Electric gas turbines rated 7,500-hp each, 3 Cooper-Bessemer GMW-8 engines, each rated 2,700-hp each, 4 Ingersoll-Rand SVG-12 gas compressors rated 660-hp each, and a Solar Saturn, 1,100-hp gas turbine and a 2,000-hp Cooper-Bessemer GMVH-10 compressor.Recently, NGPL installed an integral 10 cylinder Cooper-Bessemer W-330 engine compressor for recycling an operation, distinct from but related to storage and withdrawal. The unit is operated in parallel with 2 other units.
