Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. has more than tripled the horsepower capacity of their Bell River Gas Injection Station near St. Clair, Mich. The new capacity is represented by 2 Cooper-Bessmer 7,500-hp model Z330 gas engine compressors, one of which was started up last July with 2,250 hr of operation to date and the other just put on stream and as of this writing has just 100 hr of operation. The new units are the largest on the system and are used to inject gas into the Bell River Mills field during the spring and summer months and withdraw from Dec. through March to serve the winter load. The field has a capacity of 43 billion cu ft of working storage. It is interesting to note that large base load, high horsepower, low speed integral engine compressors of the type in this study were selected for the gas storage field injection application.
