This article reports on studies performed in a laboratory pilot unit to determine the best operating conditions for the A-4M adsorbent. The contents of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the feed and in the treated product were determined on the basis of the bromine number. The adsorbent efficiency was rated according to the residual content of unsaturated hydrocarbons and the quantity of treated feed per unit weight of adsorbent. The principal reaction in treating aromatic hydrocarbons to remove unsaturates on various natural adsorbents and also on A-4M is polymerization of the unsaturated hydrocarbons. In treating xylene cuts with natural adsorbent, the removal of unsaturated hydrocarbons is accompanied by disproportionation of the xylene. The degree of disproportionation with A-4M adsorbent is quite low. It is determined that treating aromatic hydrocarbons to remove unsaturates on A-4M adsorbent is best performed in the liquid phase without any preliminary dehydration of the adsorbent, at a 200-230/sup 0/C treating temperature and a 1.7-2.5 MPa gauge pressure, with a feedstock space velocity 0.5-1.2 h/sup -1/.
