Tests at the Fos-sur-Mer terminal on the LNG behaviour in the big tanks (in French)
Gaz de France undertook tests on the two 35,000 cu m LNG reservoirs at the Fos-sur-Mer terminal to evaluate factors controlling the release of boiloff gas, after finding that theoretical studies were limited by available knowledge of LNG behavior. Tests were conducted to determine: the boiloff rate at constant pressure at various liquid levels in a tank; the development of pressure in a closed tank; and the time for return of LNG to thermodynamic balance when the operating pressure of the tank is suddenly changed. Operation of the terminal was studied during cycles involving the discharge of a number of 40,000 cu m LNG carriers. Factors affecting the evolution of boiloff gas are discussed including movements in the interface, rate of vaporization, nitrogen content of the gas, and stratification and rollover.
