ASHRAE maps code for existing buildings

The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has drafted a set of energy-conservation standards for existing industrial buildings that will be used as a basis for Federal, state, and local building codes. Another code is being prepared for commercial buildings. An energy audit is mandated for buildings using one billion or more Btus a year, with additional audits required of large energy users. Each facility must then adopt a conservation goal and a timetable for reaching the goal. Federal funds will be available to states to meet lighting standards in existing buildings, although there are presently no funds for thermal standards except for new and retrofitted buildings. Some states feel the burden of enforcing lighting standards will be too great. The draft also defines cost-effective energy reduction and energy efficiency, requires equipment upgrading, encourages on-site power generation, and proposes energy modeling.
