Gas hike bite won't be too costly: DOE

A DOE study of deregulation effects indicates that industrial energy users will not feel as much impact from incremental gas pricing and that there will be a smaller increase of overall natural gas supplies than expected, although industry will get more gas as homeowners and utilities shift to other fuels. The controversial report is based on assumptions that are challenged by some members of Congress. The DOE study assumes, for example, that prices for high-cost Alaskan gas, synthetic natural gas, and imported liquefied gas will be rolled in, but critics point out there is no guarantee that these sources will be developed. Critics of the deregulation bill cite the report's finding that industrial users will be the least affected by price increases and challenge the projection of increased gas production. Supporters of the bill claim the DOE did not use valid modeling for its study.
