LNG insurance bill seen hiking cost, cutting supply

Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)
OSTI ID:5127351
Opponents to a House bill requiring importers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to guarantee up to $100 million liability for an accident claim it will raise costs and restrict supplies to users if enacted. Sponsored by the House subcommittee on commerce energy and power, the bill's chances are unknown. It is designed to coordinate licensing procedures, but its safety rules and stricter criteria for need and financial liability may jeopardize some LNG projects. New installations would be limited, possibly to a total of six, and would be sited in remote areas. The DOE is also considering whether to impose incremental pricing regulations or rolled in price increases for LNG.
