The Methane Reception Terminal of British Gas Corp. at Canvey Island, which began as a pilot-plant operation in 1958 and received the first commercial cargo of LNG in Oct. 1964, has in recent years performed as a service the commissioning of 11 LNG carriers, including 5 with spherical tanks of the Moss-Rosenberg design, 3 with tanks of the Technigaz membrane design, and 2 with the Gaz Transport membrane design. Facilities at Canvey Island include a minimum depth of 32 ft at the loading jetty, large storage tanks containing LNG, LPG, and liquid nitrogen, flexibility in piping and equipment, and a staff well versed in handling LNG. The procedure followed begins with precommissioning planning, first by British Gas and then at the shipyard and also on the ship. Although the commissioning remains the responsibility of the shipowners or shipbuilders, the Canvey personnel are available for assistance. Commissioning procedures are described in some detail, including purging with inert gas and with natural gas, cooldown with LNG sprays, pump and piping testing through transfers of LNG from tank to tank, and preliminary gas burning trials on the ship's boilers.
