LNG tank designs. Technical report, April-December 1972

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6129130
The various systems for shipboard containment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) that are either in service or seriously proposed for service are described. The influence of LNG upon the general design of the ship is discussed and it is shown that the characteristics of LNG as a cargo have combined to result in a ship that has special tanks, special safety systems, special propulsion systems and a conspicuous appearance. Twelve of the more prominent free-standing tank designs and eight of the more prominent membrane tank designs are discussed. Costs for the LNG shipbuilding contracts awarded to General Dynamics and Newport News in October in 1972 are shown.
