Shipboard LNG tanks

The LNG cargo tank developed by J.R. Kane uses a novel geometry to provide benefits of reduced height (for both tank and ship) and better utilization of the normal cargo hold of the ship. In addition, the tanks can be contained completely belowdeck, leaving the weather deck free of large penetrations and making the ship more stable and less expensive. The complete shell of the tank is constructed from simple composites that require curvature in a vertical plane only. The contour is octagonal everywhere in horizontal section but curvilinear in side elevation, with eight sides linear in plane view but curved vertically to form circularly or elliptically arched shell surfaces, intersecting in a point at their top and connected at their base to an octagonal flat bottom. This arrangement permits the container to be seated directly upon the insulated ship's inner bottom.
