The microcoulometric method is applicable to the determination of S in the range of 1.5 to 100 ppM in hydrocarbon products that are gases at normal temperature and pressures. The method is applicable to the determination of volatile S in liquid samples; however, another method must be used for total S on such samples. Oxidative pyrolysis converts the S to SO/sub 2/ which then flows to a titration cell where it reacts with triiodide ion. The total current necessary to coulometrically replace the consumed triiodide ion is a measure of the sulfur present in the sample. Halide concentrations of up to 10 times the S level and total N/sub 2/ concentrations of up to 1.0% do not interfere with the method; however, the method is not applicable in the presence of total heavy metal concentrations in excess of 500 ppM.
