Standard test method for trace nitrogen in liquid petroleum hydrocarbons (microcoulometric method)

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6556513
This method covers the determination of the trace total nitrogen in liquid hydrocarbons boilng in the range from 50 to 550/sup 0/C (120 to 1020/sup 0/F), with viscosities between 0.2 and 20 cSt (mm/sup 2//s). The method is applicable to naphthas, distillates, and oils containing 2 to 5000 ppM total nitrogen. The 50 to 350/sup 0/C (120 to 660/sup 0/F) boiling range naphthas and distillates can be injected directly into the pyrolysis tube. The 350 to 550/sup 0/C (660 to 1020/sup 0/F) boiling range oils are diluted and introduced through the single boat inlet system. The sample of liquid petroleum hydrocarbon is injected or volatilized from an inert sample boat into a stream of hydrogen gas flowing through a pyrolysis tube containing a nickel catalyst maintained at approximatly 700/sup 0/C. Reductive pyrolysis converts the nitrogen to ammonia, acid gases are absorbed in a basic scrubber at about 380/sup 0/C, and the ammonia reacts with hydrogen in a titration cell. The hydrogen ions consumed are coulometrically replaced, and the total current required to replace the hydrogen ion is a measure of the nitrogen present in the sample.
