A new compact scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with easy-to-construct {ital X}--{ital Z} inertial sample translation has been developed. A key feature of this design is that a single piezoelectric tube performs inertial sample translation, {ital X}--{ital Y} scan, and the {ital Z} feedback control. The performance of the STM is tested by imaging a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite sample. The ability of this STM to translate the sample laterally is demonstrated using a gold sample. The design is stable against the thermal drifts in the {ital X}--{ital Y} plane.
