The performance of squirrel-cage induction motors in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems contributes significantly to the energy consumption for HVAC equipment. New regulations on energy conservation in buildings recognize the importance of using high-efficiency motors. Methods for improving the efficiency and power ratings of motors and the annual savings and payback periods for motors with hp ratings from 1 to 25 are discussed. Based on 4000 hr of operation and electric power costs of 3 cents/KWH these payback periods range from less than six months to 21 months. It is concluded that it pays to use high-efficiency motors, especially in the smaller sizes, when either replacing or newly installing electric motors. (LCL)
