Effect of feedback on a nonlinear kink perturbation in a tokamak

Experiments are reported on the effect of a feedback system on the temporal characteristics of the m=2 kink perturbation in the TO-1 tokamak. In the absence of feedback, the perturbation amplitude pulsates in time. At a relatively low gain level, the feedback changes the pulsation period. Over a certain interval of phase angles, an increase in the gain above a certain threshold causes the pulsation to give way to a suppression mode; i.e., the perturbation amplitude falls off substantially. The experimental results agree with the model in which the simple theory for the tearing-mode instability is supplemented with an account of the plasma rotation in the minor azimuthal direction with a constant angular velocity and also with an account of the inertial nonlinearity found phenomenologically.
