The time evolution of a nonlinear kink perturbation has been studied in experiments in the TO-1 tokamak. The nonlinearity plays an essential role. A functional relationship is found between the perturbation amplitude and its first and second time derivatives which is maintained throughout the evolution. The behavior of the perturbation can be interpreted as a spontaneous oscillation with an inertial nonlinearity. A system of differential equations describing these signals is derived from a phenomenological analysis of oscilloscope traces of the signals from a magnetic probe.
