Feedback suppression of the disruptive instability in the TO-1 tokamak

Experiments on feedback stabilization of the disruptive instability in the TO-1 tokamak are reported. The feedback system consists of an m=2, n=1 helical winding, an amplifier which can produce a current up to 600 A in the winding in a frequency band from 5 to 150 kHz, and magnetic probes, used to detect the variable poloidal magnetic field. Because of the automatic gain control, the action of the feedback is reduced to damping the fluctuations in the kink perturbation amplitude. In the absence of feedback, the disruptive instability is observed in discharges with a second current increase, at the maximum current. This instability does not occur when the feedback is used.
