U. S. must restructure its energy priorities

Mr. Kalish of the American Gas Association examines the 20-year projections of natural gas supplies and concludes that U.S. priorities must be restructured to avoid near-time economic hardships by increasing gas supplies and long-term planning to develop new energy sources and increase reliance on coal. He blames low prices for the heavy consumption of natural gas by industrial users and the decline in production of gas. Estimates of producible gas range from a 20- to an 80-year supply, depending on the method of analysis. A national commitment to produce gas will require changes in government restrictions, preferably price deregulation. Legislative action is needed to develop outer continental shelf resources, to resolve environmental conflicts of coal utilization, and to establish interdependence with Mexico and Canada to bring gas from those countries and from Alaska.
