Supplemental gas supplies and the Nation's energy future

Staff members of the American Gas Association provide statistical data on natural and synthetic sources of supplemental gas. Inadequate recognition of the supply potential and unrealistic price controls by the Federal government are blamed for the minor research and development effort in this area. Estimates of an increase in natural gas production in the lower 48 states by 1990 are contingent on deregulation of new gas prices. Several tables illustrate the potential for increased production and supplemental sources, such as synthetic and liquefied natural gas, coal gasification, Alaskan gas, new technologies, and imports from Canada and Mexico. The costs of high-Btu coal gas plants are compared with those of coal-fired power generation.
